The Perfume Pagoda is one of the highlights of the
Hanoi area and one of the most important religious sites in Buddhist Vietnam.
Every spring, after the Vietnamese New Year, thousands of Vietnamese pilgrims
come here to pray for all the health and prosperity they need to get them
through the year. The pagoda itself is built into limestone cliffs and can only
be reached by boat and foot, as there are no roads into this area.
The area of beautiful landscapes surrounding the Perfume Pagoda. The most
attracting elements in the pagoda's landscape are the high mountains, the deep
forests and the streams harmoniously intermingled with rice fields. Huong Tich
grotto was discovered more than 2,000 years with its many small temple and
pagodas, is considered the most beautiful grotto in northern Vietnam.

Cable-car at mountainous Huong (Perfume) pagoda to open
A cable-car system will be inaugurated on Jan. 10, 2006 to serve the biggest and
longest pilgrimage season on a mountain range of Huong pagoda. The Huong festival, which will kick off on Feb. 6 and last through March this year
in the My Duc district, Ha Tay province, 60km of Ha Noi, is also attractive to
sight-seers. Visitors and pilgrims often go up and down from rivers to mountains
and travel on foot from one mountain to another to ask favours of Buddha.
Ben Duc, the river gate to the Pagoda, is crowded with boats and people. The
boats take the visitors to Elephant Mountain, Dragon Mountain, and then to the
Trinh Temple, dedicated to a former general of a Hung King. After visiting the
temple to pay respect to Lord Buddha, visitors continue the boat trip in order
to see Glutinous Rice Plate Mountain, Chicken Mountain, and more.
The system of 33 cable-cars, which can carry six people each at a time, will
help make the journey physically easier, and will cost just 60,000 VND (3.50
USD) for a round-trip ticket and 40,000 VND for a one-way ticket.
The cable-car equipment, including the 1,218 m-long cable line and 33 cabins,
have world-famous trademarks such as Doppelmayr of Austria and OMEGA-3 of
Switzerland, companies with exellent safety records.
